What we did for Tactica

Server provisioning automation

For a hosting provider, growth is defined by the ability to add capacity rapidly. Tactica needed to scale their server fleet to meet demand, but could not afford the delays or inconsistencies of manual configuration. So we implemented an automated provisioning model to ensure every new server was production-ready from the moment it came online. Our DevOps engineers started with:

  1. Setting up brand new servers: We managed the complete lifecycle of new server provisioning. This involved optimizing OS and service configurations for performance from day one, ensuring seamless integration into the existing hosting environment, and preparing nodes to handle client workloads efficiently immediately upon launch.
  2. Automating to speed up delivery: To support rapid scaling, we codified the entire configuration setup using Ansible and Bash. This automation eliminated manual bottlenecks, enabling us to provision identical, high-performance servers at speed, supporting Tactica's expansion as a leading provider in Iceland.

Continuous optimization & 24/7 support

Infrastructure at scale requires constant vigilance. The project began with a significant backlog of performance issues that threatened stability. Our role was to stabilize the immediate situation and then establish a permanent 24/7 watch to ensure those issues never returned. So our activities were focused on:

  1. Project optimization & bottleneck resolution: We kicked off the engagement by tackling an immediate backlog of 41 critical infrastructure tasks in a single day. By grouping and prioritizing these issues, we resolved performance bottlenecks efficiently without disrupting agreed SLAs, immediately stabilizing the platform.
  2. 24/7 real-time monitoring & incident response: We deployed comprehensive monitoring tools to track server health and resource usage in real-time. Our dedicated team is always on call, ready to detect and respond to system challenges immediately. This ensures the minimal downtime required to protect Tactica's reputation and client trust.

We validate backups for databases and site data, confirming their reliability and verifying restore times to ensure quick data recovery.

Preliminarily, we also documented the RPOs and RTOs for each workload class.

Regular drills transformed our disaster recovery processes from a simple checklist into a robust and proven capability.

We implement standardization and optimization measures for cPanel across the entire setup:

  • encompassing service profiles
  • tuning of EasyApache/PHP-FPM
  • configuring for MySQL/MariaDB
  • adding mail hygiene through SpamAssassin
  • setting up backups and monitoring mechanisms.

This initiative resulted in enhanced panel performance, reduction in service-related inquiries, and improved predictability of server behavior under load conditions.

We implement operational optimizations on the WordPress sites for our clients, which include:

  • Opcode, object, and page caching
  • Setting up separate PHP-FPM pools for each tenant
  • Adjusting image compression and CDN settings
  • Ensuring proper database indexing and auto-vacuum hygiene
  • Implementing log rotation
  • Offloading scheduled cron jobs and tasks

In terms of security, we establish baseline measures that include:

  • Minimizing the number of plugins
  • Enabling automatic critical updates
  • Setting up a Web Application Firewall (WAF) and rate limits
  • Conducting malware scans with quarantine protocols in place

New dedicated servers were provisioned and secured using consistent golden images, kernel/OS baselines, vhost templates, TLS settings, and monitoring.
